Due Date! Due Date!

My little sister is a full 40 weeks pregnant with her first little one today!  We are all very anxiously awaiting his or her arrival.  She's asked me to take pictures for them in the delivery room, so I've been staying close by the phone waiting for 'the call'.  She called today to update me about this afternoon's doctor visit.  When my caller ID showed her name, I got super excited and thought she must be in labor!  She wasn't :/.  I told her that she is now banned from calling me until she is actually in labor and that she may only text me or Facebook message me!  I don't need that kind of false excitement in my life!

On July 8th, we threw a little shower for her and Joe.  We made it a coed BaByQ and it was a blast. We played just a few games, a relay, which was wild and competeitive, the standard 'guess the mother's girth' game, and a challenging nursery rhyme triva game.

Everybody had a lot of fun and Haley and Joe were given a lot of wonderful gifts to help them get ready for the baby, who I've dubbed 'Clyde' so far.

My little cousin (the one closest in age but about 16" taller than me) and his wife are also expecting their first baby!  He or she is due to arrive August 1st!  So within a week or two we'll have to new tiny members of the family.  It's a race now to see which one will make its appearance first.

Please keep my sister, brother-in-law, cousin, cousin-in-law and the babies in your prayers for safe (and soon) deliveries that result in happy, healthy babies!

Another New Niece, Audrey!

The end of September was a very busy and exciting time for us! Within two days we welcomed 2 new members to our family, the first by birth and the second by marriage.  This post is about that brand new baby.

Audrey Vianne was born on September 27, 2013 at 8lbs 11oz. and 21 in.  She is the third in her family, welcomed by Mommy, Daddy, big brother Evan and Big sister, Claire.  She brings my niece/nephew total to 6!

I wanted to share some of the newborn shots of Audrey that I took!

We Have a New Niece!

Do you all remember how I mentioned that I made a cowboy boot and hat set for a soon-to-be-here little Texan?  Well... she's here!

Our newest niece, Sloane, made her arrival on August 1st.  We are all excited to see more pictures and get to see her.  Actually, when I told Brennan, he was ready to jump in the car right away and head for Texas!  "I want to see my baby cousin NOW!"

Congratulations, Mike and Marija, on your little cowgirl.

My Experience with Kids Sleeping Through the Night

I've heard many, many times that kids will sleep through the night when they are ready.  I've been told that sometimes it happens gradually and that sometimes it happens all at once, but I've always had a hard time believing that it can really happen so suddenly.

I believe it now.

Bryleigh has suddenly become a wonderful sleeper.  The day we moved into or new house, almost 2 weeks ago, she spent the entire night in our bed, which was normal and routine for her.  The 2nd night in our house, she stayed in her own crib all night long!  She has NEVER done this before in her 10.5 months of life.  I heard her make a few whines a couple of different times, but that was it.  This has become her new normal and I can't describe how happy it makes me!!!

Most nights, I nurse her to sleep and then lay her in her bed.  Almost every night that is the last I hear her until morning.  She was a baby who used to almost never sleep in her crib and I just can't explain the sudden transformation!

Brennan didn't sleep well through the night until he was over 2, either.  With him, good sleep has happened very gradually.  I'd say that he has become a good sleeper over the course of the last year.  With him, the key seemed to be getting a great bedtime routine that slowly worked him from being cuddled to sleep to being able to fall asleep in his bed on his own.

My experiences have been so different with each child, but one thing is the same.  I do not miss getting up in the middle of the night!

Hyland's Homeopathic Products Review and Giveaway

Having a sick or uncomfortable baby is miserable!  When they aren't happy, YOU aren't happy.  That's just the nature of kids.  You want to help them feel better, but sometimes it seems like your options are limited.  Many of the medicines available aren't the safest, especially for little kids and if you are like me, you try to avoid giving them whenever possible.  That means your poor baby has to feel pretty bad before you use a medication.  Well, I've got great news for you!  You can get homeopathic products that are safe for your baby and will help them feel so much better!

Hyland's Homeopathic Products are 100% natural and are safe for your child (and you...  There is an entire line of products for adults, too).  There is a product available for a huge variety of ailments from sicknesses, to restlessness, to teething.  The remedies that come in tablet form quickly dissolve, making it easy to treat babies and kids.  Some remedies also come in liquid form.

I was sent a wonderful package of Hyland's products to review with my kids.  It included Allergy Relief, Calms Forte 4 Kids, Flu Care, Sniffles & Sneezes, Cold 'n Cough, Cough Syrup, Colic Tablets, and the popular Teething Tablets.  What a great variety of products!

I wasn't able to try all of these products as I typically have pretty healthy kids, but I did try some of them.

One of the products I was most excited about was the Calms Forte 4 Kids.  Sometimes Brennan has a hard time settling down at night and falling asleep.  It isn't every night, but just here and there.  Most of the time we can tell by evening whether or not it is going to be 'one of those nights'.  On those nights, we'll give him one does of Calms Forte 4 Kids- his 'calm down' medicine.  He really likes it and takes it happily.  He'll even say it is yummy.  Shortly after we give it to him, sure enough, we notice him beginning to settle down.  He'll typically choose a less crazy activity like blocks or books and begin to wind down.  Bedtime on his crazy nights has become so much easier.  Now he can fall asleep with ease.  I'm very satisfied with this product.

We tried the Cold 'n Cough liquid and the Sniffles 'n Sneezes on Brennan as well, when he came down with a cold.  I'm not quite as sure of the results with this one.  Brennan is extremely tough when it comes to getting sick.  Normally we don't even notice that he is sick until his nose starts running like crazy.  He rarely slows down or gets whiny because of sickness... just naughtier!  So, this time we tried using Hyland's cold remedies.  He was mostly congested.  His nose wasn't running much. He took the medicines easily (at different times, of course) and liked the taste.   We didn't notice a huge difference in his attitude or symptoms.  Though they may have made him feel better, it was hard to tell with his ridiculously high tolerance to discomfort.

Neither of my kids have Allergies or got the Flu (thank God!) so we haven't tried either of those yet.

Bryleigh was my test subject for the Colic Tablets and the Teething Tablets.  We gave her the Colic Tablets when she was really crying and upset, but we didn't know why.  We also tried them when she was gassy, since one of the ingredients is supposed to help with gas pain.  They did seem to help her settle down some.  The didn't cure the crying completely, but definitely helped.

The Teething Tablets were even better.  They really seem to help ease her pain.  They work the best in the daytime when she can naturally tolerate the pain better, and they help at night, but at night I do still occasionally give her acetaminophen. Overall, I am pleased with both the Colic and Teething Tablets.

The only thing that I could even come up with for Hyland's to improve upon is the actual appearance of the tablets.  They all look identical- small, round, and white.  It would be nice if they were different shapes or colors so that they could be easier to tell apart, in case of a mix up or something.  This is pretty minor, though, considering that you should be able to keep them straight in their own, clearly labeled bottles.

I've got to give Hyland's a big two thumbs up on their products.  What a great alternative to traditional medications!

Wanna win the same Hyland's gift package that I reviewed?   Hyland's is generously providing one winner the exact same package that I reviewed!  Just fill out the form to enter! (US only, please)

Bryleigh's Latest Achievements!

Lately I've been telling you about all of the cute things Brennan has been saying and doing.  He is developing such a funny personality!

Well, I thought I should brag up my baby girl a little!  Bryleigh is ALREADY almost 7 months.  She'll officially be 7 months on Halloween.   Better start planning that first birthday party! :)

She has become extremely mobile, crawling around the house quickly and getting wherever she wants to go.  Within the last couple of weeks she has begun to pull up on the furniture already!  I cannot believe that she'd doing this!  She is on the small side for her age, so it looks ridiculous to see such a tiny little body accomplishing such impressive things.

Bryleigh's 2nd tooth just popped through a few days ago.  What perfect timing!  She's starting to look like a little Jack-o-lantern just in time for Halloween.  One thing that I love about her is that when you hand her a teether or something to chew on, she doesn't drop it.  She's got a death grip on that thing, so I have very little worry of losing anything in a store, etc.

She seems to be laying the groundwork for waving.  I can't say that we've seen a full fledged wave yet, but we have seen little hand movements that resemble waves, for sure.  Along with that social part of her personality comes talking.  She's been babbling up a storm for the last few days!  She makes lots of different sounds, each cuter than the next.  And the fact that her brother has to copy her every noise is pretty adorable, too.  I can only imagine in a couple of years how many times I will hear, "Mooooommm!  Brennan is copying me!"  Bryleigh hasn't said a definitive "Mama" or "Dada" yet, but when she cries she has started the "Mamamamamamama" stuff...  I'll just say that she knows what she wants.

Her extreme distaste for anyone but me is improving.  For a few weeks, anytime I would set her down or pass her off to anyone else, she would SCREAM HER HEAD OFF!  Now, she finally is beginning to get more comfortable with other people again.  She really enjoys spending a bit of time on the floor to play and explore.  She is already getting into stuff!  This morning I found her trapped underneath the kitchen table and she already enjoys pulling books off of the bookshelf (and onto herself).  I've noticed one big difference between her and Brennan- a stern look or a firm 'no' seems to get to her, whereas Brennan has never cared.  One of the first signs that her personality might be modeled after me.  I guess Ryan was just like Brennan as a kid, so maybe we'll each have a mini-me.

Bry is beginning to enjoy some solid food.  She likes bananas and carrots and isn't the biggest fan of cereals yet.  Next on the agenda- peas!

Watching Bryleigh and Brennan interact makes me so happy.  She lights up when he comes around and he is the same way.  He tells her many times a day that she is such a nice girl and is so so cute.  He showers her with affection... or maybe I should say that he typhoons her with affection since it is quite often a little wilder and rougher than we would prefer.

We are so blessed to have such amazing kids.  I love watching them grow and wonder each day with life has in store for them...  Many wonderful, amazing experiences, I hope!

Tutu Tutorial! Easy to do yourself!

About a week ago I made my daughter her very first tutu.  It turned out beautifully and was so easy!  I want to share with you exactly how I did it and how you can do it, too!

Do It Yourself (DIY)

Tutu Tutorial!

Supplies:
  • 1/2" to 1" elastic
  • Sewing machine or needle and thread
  • A few yards of tulle (varies depending upon desired size, length, and fullness of tutu).  I like to use the 6 inch spools for ease of cutting.
  • Scissors
Optional Supplies:
  • Cardboard for wrapping and cutting
  • 2 rubberbands
  • A few yards of 1/2" to 1" ribbon for wrapped waist
Step 1:  Measure the waist of the tutu wearer-to-be.

Step 2:  Cut a piece of elastic slightly smaller than your waist measurement.  Overlap the ends and sew by hand or with a machine.  I recommend making your elastic waist a bit smaller than your measurement if you want the tutu to be nice and full.  The tighter the knots, the more the elastic is stretched while tying, the larger the waist becomes.

Step 3: Measure and wrap your tulle.  The easiest way to do this is to cut a cardboard template twice the length of your desired tutu length.  If you want your tutu to be 9 inches in length, make your cardboard template 18 inches long.  I wanted my tutu to be 7 inches long, so I made my template 14 inches long.  It needs to be a few inches wide- this is not picky, just wide enough to wrap the tulle around quite a few times.  If you don't want to make a template, you can can your tulle by measuring each strip.  For my tutu, I wrapped each of my two colors all the way around my template 20 times.  This gave me 40 strips of each color for a total of 80.  This was about perfect for a pretty full 6 month size tutu.

Step 4: Cut your tulle.  Place a rubber band around each end of your template and wrapped tulle to hold it in place.  Then carefully slide a scissors between your template and the wrapped tulle on each end and cut.

Step 5: Begin to wrap your tulle.  I found that the easiest way to do this was to slip the waist band around my thigh so it is easy to reach and keeps it in place.  Fold tulle strip(s) in half.  Slide the folded center under the elastic.  Pull the loose ends through the loop and pull tight.

Try to keep the knots all at once side of the elastic.  For a fuller tutu, make your knots tight and close together.  For a lighter look, make looser knots and don't push them too close together.

Step 6 (optional): Wrap ribbon around the waist band between every few knots,, or as desired.  Tie both ends of the ribbon in a pretty bow!

Step 7:  Oooh and ahhh about the beautiful job you did and take a lot of pictures of your cutie in her new tutu!

Some More Favorite Books!

I did a post a long while back about some of our favorite books.  Now, thanks to Dolly Parton's
Imagination Library, our wonderful friends and family, and many of my old kids books, I have a few more to tell you about!

Brennan's Favorite Books-
Brennan loves to read, both alone and with us.  He has several books memorized so well that you would think he really can read!  I might just start working on that... :)

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?-

Brennan loves this book because of its predictable pattern and bright pictures.  He has a very easy time 'reading' this book to himself or to me.  Like most Eric Carle books(Also authored 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'), I think most little kids would like this one.

Llama Llama Red Pajama & Llama Llama Goes to School-

All of the llama llama books tell endearing stories with some kind of moral.  These books instill the ideas of patience and trust, important lessons for every child to learn.  The rhymes in these books are great and the pictures are just as sweet as little llama, himself.  Brennan even has his own stuffed llama to cuddle with at night!

Where's my T.R.U.C.K.-

This book is so cute and clever.  When Tommy loses his favorite truck, he will leave no stone unturned in an effort to find it!  The situation looks grim, but as luck would have it, his persistence pays off!  I love the fact that it is easy to be really enthusiastic with this book, which kids just L.O.V.E., too!

Bryleigh's Favorite Books-

Look at the Animals-
This book is absolutely perfect one of baby's first books.  Featuring animals doing what they are best at, the simple, highly contrasting pictures will grab baby's attention and keep it!  We have another book by the same author, Peter Linenthal, called Look, Look! It has the exact same features as the first and Bryleigh loves this black, white, and red book a lot, too.

Baby Faces-
Like most other babies, Bryleigh really likes looking at other babies, or even herself in the mirror.  This book plays into their love for checking out faces by showing clear baby faces conveying different feelings or emotions.

Mama's Favorite Books-

Sleep, Baby, SleepSleep Baby, Sleep-

I love this book for how it encourages children to live up to their full potential.  It highlights personality traits such as strength, happiness, curiosity, and more.  The rhythmic verse and calming pictures make this perfect for bedtime.  As an example, "Soar, baby, soar.  The whole world you'll explore.  Fly like the goose who climbs and roams yet always knows his way back home.  Soar, baby, soar."  Each verse is sweet and inspirational- a great story to end story time with!

The Mine-O-SaurThe Mine-o-saur-
Teach your little ones why it is a good idea to share with this adorable book!  The Mine-O-Saur learns to share the hard way, but it all turns out well in the end.  I love the flow and rhyme of this book and Brennan does, too.

Check out any of these books for your little ones and you'll be glad you did!
