Our New Bed Time Routine

Let's start by saying this- I love my son SO much.  He is funny, sarcastic, remarkably witty for a 2 year old, sweet, and waaaay too smart for his own good, which leads me to our issue.

Brennan has always been a high maintenance sleeper.  Some aspects of his sleep are improving (not getting up as often at night), but some are getting even worse!  Bed time lately has become the most dreaded time of our day.  Brennan has been taking forever to fall asleep!  I'll admit, his bed time routine was really lacking.  It went sort of like this- get him to eat as much as possible, play for a while possibly with one of his shows on in the background, get on night diaper and pj's, maybe read a few books, and sit on the couch watching TV with either Mom or Dad, drinking a bottle then cuddling until he was totally asleep.  Yes.  I know.  It was bad.  But believe it or not, we used to have a bed time routine.  We used to read stories in his room and then listen to music until he fell asleep.  At one point, it even got good enough that he would let us lay him down and he would put himself to sleep with little or no crying!

Then the evil genius in Brennan reared his ugly head and he started rebelling against his routine.  We would sit in his room, rocking for the LONGEST time and he still would not go to sleep.  He would be almost asleep and then he would just sit up and ask to go out to the couch.  If we tried laying him down, he would cry forever, to the point of making himself sick.  Finally, one night I just gave in.  I brought him out to the living room to cuddle with me on the couch and he was asleep within minutes.  Now he had us.  Every night he would fight us until we were on the couch and pretty soon that just became the routine because it worked.  He was always asleep within a few minutes.

Now, this 'routine' is backfiring, too!  He'll lay with me for a while, and then start freaking out until he gets to lay with Daddy.  So then Daddy holds him... before you know it he is screaming for Mama again.  This goes on and on until he finally exhausts himself, or until we lay him in his crib and let him holler for a while.  Sometimes after that he realizes that we really mean business and bed time is BED TIME!

He was also drinking his bottle and then begging and crying for more.  This problem has luckily already been solved.  One bottle of milk is all he gets (and that is only 1st thing in the morning, before his nap, and before bed) and after that it's water.  We're working on getting rid of the bottle, but it is TOTALLY his one security item and he is addicted to it... one step at a time!

Anyway, three nights ago we told him that bed time was going to be different from now on.  We explained that he is a big boy, and he doesn't need to fall asleep in the living room watching TV every night (like a 60 year old man).  We told him that from now on, we would have supper and play quietly with blocks or puzzles for a little bit.  Then it would be time to put on PJ's and brush teeth.  After that he would get to pick out a few books and we would read them in his rocking chair.  Then we would cuddle and I would sing to him until he fell asleep (for now).  That first night he did surprisingly well with it, though it took him a long time to fall asleep.  The second night went better, with him falling asleep slightly quicker.  Last night wasn't very fun, though.

We did the whole routine and got to the cuddling part.  We cuddled, and cuddled, and cuddled, but he would not go to sleep!  Most of the problem is that trying to cuddle comfortably in the glider is nearly impossible.  He is much too long now, so it seems that his legs and arms are flailing everywhere.  Finally, last night I convinced him to lay in his crib and I laid on the floor next to him and held his hand.  Surprisingly, this was more comfortable than sitting in the chair.  We did this for a while, but he still wasn't asleep and I could hear Daddy trying his hardest to calm down a ticked-off Bryleigh in the living room.  She needed me.  So I quietly stood up.  Brennan did NOT approve, but he settled down when I told him that Ryan would come in and take my place.  Eventually, he did fall asleep this way.

I guess I feel like this is one step closer to a real big kid bed time, but we still have a long way to go.  We're going to keep working on it and TRY not to get discouraged!  It is really frustrating when bed time takes THAT long!  And for anyone who wants to just tell me to let him cry- NO!  First off, it's mean.  Second, you don't know my kid.  He is the epitome of stubborn.  It really is his way or the highway and though he sometimes can be swayed, he wouldn't budge on something like this.  Hopefully his stubbornness is a trait that will serve him well later in life!

Any ideas or even encouragement are appreciated!!!

Homemade Drain Cleaner

Hey everybody,

I just wanted to take a quick second to share a homemade recipe that I found online last night.  It is for a natural, homemade drain cleaner and it did the trick when we needed it to!

You see, we had a clog in our basement drain, which is where our washer drains, and the water was backing out further and further.  We are assuming that we had a lint clog, because water was still draining, but very slowly.  We quickly went to grab some chemical drain cleaner, only to find that we had none!  I hate to use the stuff, but didn't really know that there were a ton of other options.  I ran upstairs to Google 'homemade drain cleaners'.

Voila!  I had all the ingredients for the first 'recipe' (already on the washing machine, no less) and I ran downstairs to give it a try.  Here's how hard the recipe was to do...

Dump some baking soda in the drain.  Follow that up with some vinegar and watch it foam.  We did this to the drain a couple of times and it was flowing freely again.  I can't speak to how tough a clog this would work well on since we don't know what our clog was for sure, but it worked great this time.  Definitely worth a try and WAY cheaper and safer for the environment and family, too!

Hope you find this helpful!  Good luck!

Looking for activity suggestions...

Wow!  I just realized I am writing my 100th post!!!  I can't believe how things really just add up when you work on them little by little!

I'm looking for some advice again from all of my awesome blog followers.  My little man has just turned 17 months old and I'm hoping to find some more activities to do with him.  You see, I think that he get bored very easily.  Many days he seems to just play for a while and then start walking around and whining.  He just loves to be outside, so we go out to play most days, but of course, some days just aren't great for playing... especially the days when it downpours from dawn until dusk.  We play with his toys inside, we read a lot of books, and we've tried coloring, but he still is pretty into trying to take bites out of his crayons or color his face and tongue with the markers.  Play doh also tastes pretty good to him.

So, does anyone have any activity suggestions for him?  This is kind of a hard age for me!  Littler kids are easier to entertain and many times are just happy being held and older kids are able to do more difficult activities like art projects, play doh, and coloring.  He's right in the middle.  I want to stimulate his brain and keep him busy and happy.  Let me know what you do with your kids at this stage!

Thanks!

Our Favorite Books- These are Awesome!

Like most Moms, I love to spend quality time with my boy.  Sometimes I'll get down on the floor and play with him, but for the most part and I just like to be near him, watching,  and talk with him as he plays.  But what I really enjoying doing with him is reading.  It's a nice, peaceful activity that keeps both of us occupied (ONLY when he's in the mood for it!) and gets him on my lap for a little snuggle time.

I want to share some of our very favorite books with you.  These are some great books to cuddle up and read with your kiddos!

Brennan's Favorite Books
Lately, Brennan's favorite books all DO something.  They are pop up books, books with moveable pieces, books with textures, and books that talk.  The only downfall with these is that he isn't allowed to read them by himself because he'll ruin them and we love them too much for that!  I'm only listing a few.  These are definitely not the only ones, but if I included them all, this post would take all day to write, literally!

Here's his list of favorites:

DOG-

This book is truly awesome.  We got Brennan this book for Christmas and have read it hundreds of times with him!  The dogs in this book have fur patches for the reader to feel that demonstrate different textures including, fluffy, scruffy, curly, smooth, shaggy, and silky.  You can feel floppy ears and even a sticky tongue!  There are also a lot of moveable parts such as several wagging tails, a doggy shaking off after a bath, and a dog scratching himself.  I really enjoy the last couple of pages of this book a lot!  All of the dogs in this book are pictured there along with their names and their breed.  So really, this book grows with your child.  They can learn to recognize all of the breeds and become a dog aficionado!  This one is soooo worth the price (which isn't bad to begin with!)

The Very Funny Frog-

The pictures in this rhyming style book are just great.  They make me smile when I'm reading this book to my son.  We both enjoy the rhythm and rhyme and he loves how the pages pop out at him.  Brennan loves to learn about all of the garden animals featured in this book including the Very Funny Frog, of course, and many others such as rabbits, a mole, and spiders!  A word of warning, though... this book isn't best for grabby little hands!  I've already had to make a few repairs to the pictures even though I never let my son read this book by himself!

Hallmark Recordable Storybooks-

Our little man is lucky enough to have two of these awesome storybooks, one from each of his doting Grandmas!  He has "All the Ways I Love You" and the classic, "Goodnight Moon".  I do let Brennan read these books by himself, but ONLY under close supervision.  They are so special, I don't want them getting ruined!  If you aren't familiar with these books, they actually record your voice and play it back as you turn the pages.  Brennan's face just lights up when he hears his Grandmas reading to him!  At first he would look around for them, but now he knows what's going on.  To find out more about these books you can visit Hallmark's website, here.

Lull-a-bye Little One-

Now, this choice by Brennan may surprise you... it doesn't DO anything!  However, from pretty early on Brennan has really enjoyed this book.  Whether it is the bright, simple pictures or the calming rhythm and rhyme, I'm not sure, but we all like this one.  This simple story outlining a typical little girl's bedtime routine with her Mommy and Daddy is very sweet and somehow it always ends up being part of our bedtime story lineup!

Mama's Favorite Kids Books

The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear-

This book is an oldie, but a goodie!  This one holds a special place in my heart.  I remember my Mom reading this one to me all the time when I was a little girl.  It is all about how this sweet little mouse can keep the Big Hungry Bear from eating his delicious strawberry!  I just love the adorable illustrations.  I actually remember laughing when my Mom would 'sniff sniff sniff' to find the strawberry just like the Big Hungry Bear.  You can only imagine my own joy and amusement when Brennan laughed the first time I 'sniff sniff sniffed' like the Bear!

God Gave Us You-

This book is really sweeter than sweet.  The typical childlike questions that the little polar bear in this book ask make me smile every time I read it, but the answers that the polar bear Mom gives have the opposite effect on me.  I always get choked up when I'm reading this book, especially as the Mom talks about the birth of her sweet little baby.  As many of you know, I was put under general anesthesia for the birth of my own baby, so I get pretty emotional about that sort of thing!  Anyway, it is a heartwarming book that reminds us that our children are God's most wonderful gifts.

You know... I'm sure I could come up with so many more great choices, but I'm going to leave it at this for now.  Maybe I'll need to do a followup post with even more of our favorites!  I hope you'll check some of these out!  Enjoy!

A question for my readers...

Hi there everybody!

I hope you have had a wonderful Friday and that this weekend treats you well!  I've got a quick question I thought I would just put out there to see if anyone has any information to give me.  I really want to get/make my son a board book.  You see, lately he has just been enamored with looking at pictures of our family on the walls and in our photo albums.  The only problem with that is that he hasn't learned how to be gentle at all yet.  He likes to grab the pictures and I'm afraid that he'll damage them!

So that's the reason I want to make him a board book!  I'd like to have one printed with pictures of all of his family members on pages that he can't rip out.  I've looked into this a little and found very few options, all fairly spendy (at least $25 including shipping).  Does anyone know of any other options that are more affordable?  Or other ideas to accomplish my goal?  I would love some input!  Thanks!

Want your photos edited or enhanced?

If you've spent much time on my blog, you've surely noticed my love for pictures!  I love to take pictures, look at pictures, and share pictures.  But I also love to edit pictures!  This part of the process is often overlooked, but I think it is what helps to make pictures really cool.  With the right editing, you can make a nice picture stand out or give it a different 'feeling'.

So, here's what I'm thinking-  I'd like to take a shot at editing your pictures.  You can send me a picture or two with an idea of what you'd like done to it or just tell me to use my imagination.  I'll edit your pictures and email a copy back to you.  Then, I'll post before and after pictures of the edits I made onto my blog to show all of my readers (unless you ask me not to).  Here's where you can send your pictures: colleen_m_anderson@yahoo.com.

In return, I'd love it if you would follow me and share my blog with others!  Maybe you could post my button on your blog or share a link on Facebook or Twitter?  There are no requirements to have me edit your photo, but I'd appreciate you sending any new readers my way!  If you're interested in having me edit more of your photos, please feel free to contact me at colleen_m_anderson@yahoo.com.

Here are some example of photos I've taken and edited.  These will give you an idea of the things I like to do.  Let me know if you have other edits or enhancements in mind!  I can't wait to start getting pictures!  Start sending them!

Happy Flag Day!

Since today is Flag Day, I thought it would be fun to share some interesting flag facts and some information about flag etiquette with all of you.

Flag Day:
  • The first Flag Day is believed to have been celebrated on June 14, 1885 by the students of the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School.
  • Flag Day is the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 by which our United States flag was born.
  • We celebrate Flag Day, the anniversary of the Flag Resolution, every year on June 14th.
  • President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Flag Day on May 30th, 1916.
  • Flag Day wasn't really official until President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress on August 3rd, 1949, 33 years after Woodrow Wilson's Flag Day Proclamation.
Flag Facts:
  • The Flag Resolution included an explanation of the meaning behind the colors, "White signifies Purity and Innocence; Red, Hardiness and Valor; Blue, Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice."
  • As most of you know, Betsy Ross was the seamstress who sewed the first American Flag.
  • The flag has 13 stripes, one for each of the original 13 colonies.  It started with 13 stars, as well, which also represented the colonies.  Until 1818, and additional strip and star were each added to the flag with the addition of each state.  Eventually, it was pretty obvious that the scheme would have to change (I imagine that the stripes were getting pretty skinny!)  Now the flag has 13 stripes to represent the 13 colonies and 50 stars, one for each state.
Flag Etiquette (just a few rules):
  • The flag should NEVER touch the ground!
  • The flag is never supposed to be used as a decoration.  You should use buntings for this purpose.
  • The flag shouldn't be carried flat.
  • If flown with other flags, the U.S. flag should be highest.  The only other flags that should be at the same level are the flags of other nations, if we are at peace.
  • The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously.  It should only be displayed after dark if it is properly illuminated.
  • The flag shouldn't be used for clothing, advertisements, or used for anything considered disposable.
  • It is acceptable to wash and mend the flag if it becomes dirty or damaged.
  • When the flag becomes faded, torn, or worn out, it should be disposed of properly, preferably by burning.
When you need to dispose of a flag, you can contact your local American Legion or Scout Troop.  Many of these do regular ceremonial flag burnings.

I have a question... One of the etiquette rules is that the flag shouldn't be used for clothing or anything disposable.  Does this literally mean taking a flag and chopping it up into napkins or using it as sewing fabric?  I wonder because I've seen many swimsuits with an American flag pattern, as well as all sorts of cups, plates, napkins, tablecloths, etc. that are used for 4th of July celebrations.  If anyone knows, let me know!

This morning, when I remembered that it was Flag Day, I ran outside to put up my buntings.  Then, since I had a little time, I thought I would put out the rest of my patriotic decorations.  Here's what my house is looking like now!

My Baby Bites! Help!

Attention Mothers! (and Dads, Grandmas, Grandpas, Teachers, Daycare Providers and anyone else that has experience with toddlers!)

I am asking for child rearing advice!  My precious baby boy (15 months), whom you all know I just adore, is a very stubborn, strong-willed little guy.  The older he gets, the harder he gets to handle!  He definitely understands what "no" means, but he rarely chooses to listen to it.  We've tried to be firm and consistent with him, giving time outs and/or redirecting him to another activity, but in two seconds flat he is back to doing the unwanted behavior.

Our biggest problem lately is that he is becoming violent.  If we tell him "no" and try to pick him up, or walk him away from where he is, he'll bite!  He has also been known to pinch and hit, mainly in the face.  Don't get me wrong- I'm not trying to make him sound like a little monster!  He doles out as many kisses and hugs as he does bites, but we need him to realize that biting is NOT OK!  Last week my left forearm was covered in jaw shaped bruises and this week it is my right arm.  He tends to bite me more than his Dad or anyone else.  I think it is because I'm the one home with him all day so I'm the main disciplinarian.

So, I'm wondering.  Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing (obviously!)?  What did you do?  What worked for you?  Do you have any ideas to help stop the biting, specifically, or about dealing with a strong-willed child, in general?  I'm open to any and all suggestions and I'm getting desperate for some help in this area!  We are bringing Brennan to the doctor for his 15 month well baby check this morning and I definitely plan to ask the doctor what he suggests, as well.  Here's hoping someone has some good advice for me!
